On July 6th, the Catholic University Community of Ratisbon invited Mr Arian Fariborz for a lecture titled „We Are Iran – Youth Protest and Digital Resistance in the Islamic Republic“. Mr Fariborz is a publicist and co-editor of the quadrilingual website „Qantara – Dialogue with the Islamic World“ which is promoted by the governmental Goethe Institut, the Deutsche Welle and other institutions.
After a quite interesting lecture in which he portrayed different influential websites like Rotten Gods and the blog of Hossein Derakhshan, who is still imprisoned in Tehran, the following discussion revealed the terrifying world view of the lecturer.
Answering critical requests from the audience, Mr Fariborz at first denied the existence of any nuclear armament and defended Iran’s right to use nuclear energy for civil means, just to explain later, that the „peaceful history“ of the Islamic Republic with its „ritualized threats“ displayed that there wouldn’t be any danger even if the Mullahs would get the bomb. According to Mr Fariborz’ assumption, Iran as a nuclear power wouldn’t cause any more conflicts in the region and supreme leader Chamenei would never accept a nuclear strike, despite the continuous antisemitic threats of annihilation towards Israel. In his eyes, economic and political sanctions against the regime and against any government are completely ineffective (it seems like he never heard of e.g. South Africa) and a change towards democracy in Iran could just arrive, if it emerged from inside the ruling islamist system. Israel’s plans to carry out well-directed military strikes in case of emergency to decelerate the nuclear armament of Iran are to his mind not necessary steps to secure the life of its citizens, but „a victory for the Iranian hardliners around Ahmadinejad and Chamenei“.
Talking about Mir Hossein Moussavi, Mr Fariborz stated, that there are reproaches that he „could be at the bottom of the assassination of dissidents“ during his time of office as prime minister.
Regarding the role of women in Iran today, he said, that the Islamist Regime „had given them lots of opportunities“, if they strictly obeyed the islamist guidelines, though he had to confess, that they are judicially disadvantaged compared to men. This fact is for him no characteristic feature of the Islamic Republic but a „discrepancy“.
But his explanations reached their peak, when he stated, that Hamas and Hisbullah – with the aid of the Iranian Regime – would „denounce the Israeli occupation policy“, thus equalizing suicide attacks and acts of terror with criticism.
It is alarmingly that journalists such as Mr Fariborz are supported by the German Government, though it shouldn’t be much of a surprise, as dialogue without any insistence on human rights is the highest command of German foreign policy. People like Mr Fariborz provide the rhetoric that is adequate to the actions of German politicians. Their rhetoric simply consists of lying to themselves and others. Or as philosopher Theodor W. Adorno put it: a German is a person, who can’t tell a lie without believing in it himself.
